This weekend my dog Riley and I collaborated on a little DIY project. She’d been begging me for months to do something about her horrendously ugly dog crate, and I didn’t blame her. It was an eyesore for all of us! How could I put so much effort into making our home a bright, warm and happy place to thrive and meanwhile leave her own little corner neglected? Poor pooch!
Here she is, clearly showing signs of depression over her fugly crate.
How could I let it get so bad!?
“Please mama, please help me. I can’t go on living like this!”
So we decided it was time to do something about it. I have a lot of experience with gold spray paint – after all I did plan a DIY wedding last October. Gold is my favorite color and I’m well aware of its healing properties. Feeling a little down? Spray-paint some mason jars gold! Need a boost? Why not stick wooden skewers through some toy farm animals and cover them in gold? Quirky cocktail stirrers! We talked through some color options, but in the end she trusted my gut instinct. Gold it was.
So we carried her crate outside to begin the transformation. First I gave it a light coat of Zinsser Cover Stain Spray Primer, and then used 2 cans of Rustoleum Metallic Gold Spray Paint to give it that glorious hue. Total cost: $15. After it dried for many hours, we brought it back inside.
Voila! It came out so, so well! I always over-analyze which brand and shade of gold spray-paint to get, but this one came out better than I had even imagined. It’s such a pretty gold color! And I know someone else who was just as thrilled with the final product…
Here she is, clearly with a renewed sense of purpose, posing in front of her freshly blinged-out crate.
Riley, I adore you.
